Home of Stonehenge builders found

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Scientists have uncovered the largest Neolithic settlement in the United Kingdom at the Durrington Walls and believe that the village was inhabited by the people who built the Stonehenge monument.

Scientists say that the village was built around 2,600 B.C., roughly when Stonehenge was believed to have been constructed, and housed over 100 people.

Inside the areas which would have been the interior of houses at the time, scientists also found outlines of what they think were beds and cupboards or dressers. Pieces of pottery and “filthy” rubbish around the site. Animal bones, arrowheads, stone tools and other relics were also discovered.

“We’ve never seen such quantities of pottery and animal bone and flint. In what were houses, we have excavated the outlines on the floors of box beds and wooden dressers or cupboards,” said Sheffield University archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson.

So far, the dig has revealed at least 8 houses roughly 14-16 feet square, but scientists say that they think there may have been at least 25 altogether.

The site was likely to have been occupied only seasonally rather than year-round and evidence suggests that a lot of “partying” went on at the location.

“The animal bones are being thrown away half-eaten. It’s what we call a feasting assemblage. This is where they went to party – you could say it was the first free festival. The rubbish isn’t your average domestic debris. There’s a lack of craft-working equipment for cleaning animal hides and no evidence for crop-processing,” added Pearson.

The Durrington Walls are approximately 2 miles from the Stonehenge site.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Bill & Rebecca, owners of Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, a BDSM dungeon.

Oil prices surge over $75 a barrel to a record high

Friday, April 21, 2006

Crude oil prices surged to a new record of over $75.00 a barrel on Tuesday closing at a price of $75.17. In Europe, Brent crude oil rose to $74.59. In less than a month, prices have risen $10, back to the record highs set after Hurricane Katrina caused refineries to shut down in August 2005. Prices are also 42% higher than a year ago.

Political instability in oil-producing countries is seen as a major cause of this rise. The standoff over Iran‘s nuclear program has led to strong words being exchanged and a possibility of sanctions being imposed on Iran, the world’s fourth largest producer of oil. Violence in Nigeria earlier this year has led to a drop the country’s production by almost a quarter. Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil exporter and is also a major supplier of gasoline-rich crude oil to the United States, where demand is set to increase as the “driving season” begins next month.

Edmund Daukoru, the president of OPEC and Nigerian oil minister said on Tuesday, “The current shoot up we are experiencing is as a result of the Iran problems and it’s not helped by the flare up between Israel and the Palestinians. But mainly it’s the threatening statements being made against Iran as a result of its nuclear program.”

Searching For Best Used Car Dealership Of Memphis}

Searching for Best Used Car Dealership of Memphis

by

Collierville Auto Center

Every year over 4.54 million cars are made in the USA. Still, many people in Memphis don’t own a car. Owning your own car gives a kind of independence to a person to go wherever they want and whenever they want. Car is also an asset if bought from a reputed cars dealership of Memphis.

Owning a brand new car which fits within your budget and requirements is tough as cars are expensive, and not to forget the maintenance cost too. Therefore, buying a used car is a great way of cutting the cost of your driving. This is because most new cars lose around 40% of their market value in the first year. But there are also risks involved in buying used cars, so it’s important to take your time rather than rush into any deal and to buy as far as possible with your head rather than your heart. An average car has about 30,000 parts which need to be taken care of. So is very important to select a dealer whose used cars dealership provides all types of range and services for cars in Memphis.

Selecting a used cars dealership center in Memphis can be a bit of gamble if all the factors are not considered. A few of these factors are:

YouTube Preview Image

Evaluate your requirement: By evaluating your requirements like what type of car you want, what is your budget, etc. you can short-list which Dealership center meets your requirements and your time is saved from roaming around all the used cars dealership centers of Memphis.

Inventory: Check the inventory of Dealership center. See which types of cars they have and how frequently does the inventory of their used cars changes. This helps you in determining how frequently cars are being sold by the center.

Professional staff: No one wants to deal with unprofessional or clueless or rude staff at a Dealership center. Therefore, prefer a used cars dealership center of Memphis whose salesperson makes extra efforts to meet and greet your requirements.

Inspection: Make sure the dealer lets you carefully examine everything in the car. Take your time to see the smallest detail you want in your car, and not just what the dealer shows you. Inspect the car on a dry sunny day if possible as it makes it easier to see the visual clues to the car’s real condition. For safety reasons check the car engine for rust or oil leakage. Remember a dirty engine can point to vehicle neglect but a sparkling clean engine may be the result of a recent steam clean undertaken to mask defects.

Warranty: Opt for the used cars dealership center of Memphis which gives warranty on used cars Warranties vary ranging from a Lifetime Limited Powertrain Warranty to a 90 day or 3000 mile Limited Powertrain Warranty.

Cadillac unveils Obama’s ‘Beast’, the 2009 Presidential State Car

Saturday, January 17, 2009

The US Secret Service has released the first photos Wednesday of the new presidential limousine that will transport Barack Obama down Pennsylvania Avenue next Tuesday as part of the 56th Presidential inaugural parade after he is sworn in at the Capitol. The First Limo – the 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine – will replace President Bush’s Cadillac DTS Presidential Limousine that rolled out in 2004.

Nicknamed “The Beast”, the hulking machine is a new model year 2009, modified limousine. According to General Motors, the new “2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine” is the first not to carry a specific model name. The Obama Mobile was introduced on January 14 with noticeably different styling borrowed from the Cadillac Escalade and STS, while the suspension is most likely related to the Chevrolet Kodiak medium-duty truck.

Mr. David Caldwell of General Motors has revealed that the sleek black car would include a hand-crafted interior and “state of the art electronics.” The car’s high-tech security features include five-inch-thick (12.7-centimeter-thick) bombproof glass, tough-as-nails tires, and a sealed interior that’s invulnerable to chemical attack. The armoured limousine has been heavily modified to withstand potential attacks by weapons or bombs. The San Francisco Chronicle puts it in a proper perspective noting, “a half-inch of transparent armor is enough to stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range; at a thickness of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches, the same material can withstand higher-velocity bullets fired from military assault rifles.”

According to spy photographer, Brenda Priddy, and General Motors, the limousine, which has the intricate, dual-textured grille, is also equipped with standard Goodyear Regional RHS truck tires in a 285/70R19.5 size, on 19.5-inch wheels. The rims have a run-flat device (manufactured by Hutchinson Industries). Xenon headlights from the Escalade are installed in the front, while the rear has some STS part. The doors are at least 20 centimeters (8 inches) thick. It carries the US flag on the front fenders and an embroidered Seal of the President of the United States is affixed to several panels in the back.

According to the US Secret Service, the vehicle would be a “valuable asset” in providing the President with the highest level of protection. “Although many of the vehicle’s security enhancements cannot be discussed, it is safe to say that this car’s security and coded communications systems make it the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world,” Nicholas Trotta, Assistant Director for the Office of Protective Operations said in a statement. The new limousine is the responsibility of White House Transportation Agency.

One of the specifications is that we don’t talk about the specifications.

The Presidential State Car is the official state car used by the President of the United States. It is informally known as “Cadillac One”. The current Presidential State Car is a 2005 hand-crafted, armored, and stretched DTS (DeVille Touring Sedan) built on a GM four-wheel drive platform. It was first used on the second inauguration parade of George W. Bush in 2005. But the version to be used by President Obama uses a GMC Topkick chassis, while maintaining the Cadillac exterior.

The President of the United States travels in one of two armoured Cadillac limousines based upon the normal sedan, the Cadillac DTS, with heavy customisation. Lincoln cars have also been used in the past, most notably by President John F Kennedy. The current limousines were custom-built by O’Gara, Hess and Eisenhart, founded in Fairfield, Ohio in 1942. It specializes in armouring limousines for presidents and heads of state.

President William McKinley was the first US president to ride in an automobile. However, it was President Theodore Roosevelt who rode on the first government-owned car, a white Stanley Steamer. Roosevelt’s successor, William Howard Taft, was the first president to use a presidential state car that was permanently stored in the White House garage.

Meanwhile, Obama’s 2005 Chrysler 300C Hemi was auctioned on eBay with a starting bid of $100,000 and a buy-it-now price of $1,000,000. It has less than 21,000 miles on it and is in like-new condition. He leased the car in 2004 and traded it for a Ford Escape Hybrid in 2007. The car was sold to Tim O’Boyle.

A Little History Of Transponder Keys

By Jason Bacot

The history of transponder keys can be traced to post-Berlin Wall Germany, when the number of stolen cars skyrocketed from around 30,000 in 1989 to 141,000 in 1992. Throughout Europe, over a million and a half cars were stolen per year! In 1993, the Allianz Insurance Group made the German automotive industry adopt immobilizer transponder chip key systems on cars and motorcycles. By 1994, many German and non-German models started field testing transponder keys, with all other models following by around 1998.

Transponder keys contain a small transponder chip, each of which has a unique code frequency that the computer in the car needs in order to start the car. The chip has to be fairly close to the car’s ignition barrel to be able to start the car, and the transponder key system can’t be removed from the car by someone intent on stealing it.

The radio signals used with transponder keys are encrypted, and the chance of finding the right code and getting a car started without a properly programmed transponder key is about 1 in 100 billion! Many people think that the remote that comes with their keys is the transponder, but that is not the case. The transponder is located inside the plastic case of the key head.

That means that today, if you have to replace lost car keys, you won’t be able to use your car until a professional reprograms the vehicle for a new key. If the professional doing this is your car dealer, you can expect to pay several hundred dollars for this service, and there is no guarantee that they can get to you right away. A reputable car locksmith, however, can do the exact same job, can usually dispatch someone right away, and will charge you half or less of what your car dealer will charge.

A Chicago area locksmith that advertises automotive services will have the hardware and software necessary to get you rolling again quickly. But you have to be sure that you’re dealing with a reputable locksmith, because there are some dishonest ones out there. As you may have already guessed, this is one of those “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” situations. Getting a spare set of car keys made before you ever need them is the best way to ensure you don’t get stranded by lost car keys.

Automobile locksmiths will come to you and most of them will fix your problem professionally and charge you a fair price. But you don’t want to be in the position of being desperate for a locksmith and having to start calling at random, because there’s no telling if you’ll get a good one or not. If you have a spare set of keys made and for some reason lose yours and can’t get to the spare keys, if you were satisfied with the service you got when you bought the replacement set, you know who to call, and you don’t have to worry about being taken advantage of.

Most car key locksmiths are upstanding, but you’re best off finding a good one before you ever need their services.
