3 Basic Deck Design Elements}

3 Basic Deck Design Elements

by

Richard Vande Sompel

Decks are no longer simple rectangles located at the rear of a home. Homeowners are utilizing three basic deck design elements in creating outdoor living spaces that will meet the needs and tastes of their occupants.

The ideal deck should not blend completely in with the house but at the same time it should not be shockingly different. Three elements to consider when designing a deck to match with a house and yard are mass, shape and color.

A deck’s visual mass is not just a function of its actual size. Constructing a deck low to the ground or utilizing railings that are low or not too heavy looking will enable the deck to recede and appear smaller. Allowing large beams to be visible, using thicker or more ornate railings as well as using wide facing boards will work to make the deck appear more massive.

In order to make the house to which the deck is attached seem less massive, plant trees or tall shrubs beside it. To increase the area of the deck without causing it to look too large for the home, plan it in such a way as to hug the house rather than just project out into the yard. The wraparound deck is an excellent choice for wrapping the deck around one or more corners making the deck seem to be an intregal part of the house rather than a solitary structure.

The shape that is chosen for the deck should be in harmony with the lines of the home. The deck alignment should be more horizontal than vertical.

Consider the overall shape of the house. An L-shaped deck can mirror that of the home. A plain looking home can be enhanced with a boldly shaped deck while a house with a confusing shape can benefit from a more simple deck shape.

Perhaps it’s time to consider a deck that is uniquely different such as one that incorporates a tree, is an island deck or even a peninsula deck.

In terms of color the traditional approach is to stain a deck to a redwood or cedar color or allow the deck to weather to its natural grey. However it might be more meaningful to consider applying a semitransparent or solid opaque stain to the deck. The advantage is twofold. The pigments in the stain will help to ptrotect the wood from the sun’s damaging utraviolet rays. But more importantly it is possible to obtain the desired color and look that will go best with the house.

In the end, the application of these three basic deck design elements will go a long way to assisting homeowners with the creation of deck designs that will fulfill their desires and tastes.

Transport for London wins first Anti-Social Behaviour Order against graffiti vandal

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Billy Murrell, a persistent graffiti vandal from South East London, has become the first recipient of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo) granted to Transport for London (TfL) by Greenwich Magistrates. The civil order also bans him from the top deck of buses throughout England and Wales for three years.

Murrell, a 17-year-old from Plumstead, has a history of convictions for criminal damage on public transport, including vandalising a Tube carriage in Brixton station and for damaging buses and other public property using marker pens.

This is Transport for London’s first Anti-Social Behaviour Order against a graffiti vandal — TfL was granted the power to apply for Asbos by the Home Secretary in September 2006.

The Anti-Social Behaviour Order was issued at Greenwich Magistrates Court on 12 September and also bans him from carrying any permanent marker pens or any glass cutting equipment on London Underground, railway property or any other transport provider’s property.

Metropolitan and Transport police have been made aware of Murrell’s Asbo, and have distributed his photo.

In detail, Murrell is prohibited from:

  • Entering any depot, siding or other part of London Underground property or railway property or any transport providers property which is not expressly open to the public whether on payment or otherwise throughout England and Wales
  • Carrying the following articles, in any area specified (above) or in any public place, namely any form of unset paint in any form of container, any form of permanent marker pen, any form of shoe dye or permanent ink in any form of container, any form of paint stripper in any form of container, any form of grinding stone, glass cutting equipment, glass etching solution or paste, throughout England and Wales
  • Aiding, abetting, counselling or encourage any person who was attempting or committing any form of unlawful damage towards any property not belonging to or under the direct authorised control of the defendant throughout England and Wales
  • Travelling on the top deck of the any public transport bus within England and Wales

If without reasonable excuse the defendant does anything which he is prohibited from doing by this order, he shall be liable to a detention and training order, which has a maximum term of 24 months – 12 months of which is custodial and 12 months in the community

Upon turning 18 he will be liable to imprisonment up to five years.

Submitted by: John Jacks

Written by the late broadcaster and writer Humphrey Carpenter, these stories bring a fresh and fun emphasis to school themes that kids will associate with. Short Description for some stories of Mr Majeika:

1. Mr Majeika He can behave just like any ordinary teacher if he wants to, but something has to be done about Hamish Bigmore, the class nuisance, and so he uses a little magic to turn him into a frog. And to everyone’s delight it looks as if Hamish will have to remain a frog because he can’t remember the spell to turn him back again! With him in charge, suddenly life at school become much more exciting there’s even a magic-carpet ride to Buckingham Palace!

2. With the School Inspector Poor he goes to the bottom of the class when the school inspector comes to call. Things don’t get any easier when he turns himself into a lobster by mistake. Class Three somehow has to get Wilhemina Worlock to undo the spell…

3. In the Ghost Train When Class Three and he get on board a ghost train, they are in for a surprise. Real ghosts appear and the wicked Wilhemina Worlock isn’t far away. But Jody comes to the rescue – with a dragon to help her!

YouTube Preview Image

4. With the Dinner Lady Mrs Chipchase, the nasty dinner lady, makes lunch hour at St Barty’s really unpleasant. That is, for everyone but her ‘favourite friend’, Hamish Bigmore. Up to his usual tricks, Hamish is allowed to eat chocolate instead of ghastly school dinners! he decides it’s time to sort out the menu…

5. At the Haunted Hotel ‘Oh, don’t be cowards,’ said Jody. ‘I’m sure it’s perfectly safe.’ Mysteriously stranded in the fog at night. Mr Majeika and Class Three find themselves in a creepy hotel near Hadrian’s Wall, where some very spooky things start to happen. Strange lights, ghostly sounds and vanishing people…

6. The Lost Spell Book Fun and magic combine as usual in this new story. The pupils in Class 3 at St Barty’s School are not impressed when their head teacher imposes strict rules of behaviour for Halloween. He uses a little magic to make the evening memorable but nasty Hamish Bigmore tells the local press and gets the wizard-teacher the sack. School without magic seems rather boring and he doesn’t last long in the other jobs he tries. His long-time enemy, Wilhelmina Warlock is clearly behind all the trouble; she and the dreaded Hamish must be defeated before life can return to normal.

7.The Music Teacher

‘Music teacher? What music teacher?’

The sudden arrival of a new music teacher throws St barty’s School into confusion. Mysterious smells start coming from the staffroom and creepy-crawlies appear out of nowhere. The new arrival is, of course, Wilhelmina Worlock, a wicked witch with some nasty tricks.

8. The School Book Week

‘Oh dear,’ said Mr Majeika, ‘I seem to have made the spell too strong.’

Class Three has fun during Book Week, when famous storybook characters suddenly appear! But there’s trouble ahead with Wilhemina Worlock the witch at the school’s Olympic Sports Day…

Will Mr Majeika manage to magic up a solution?

Spelbound declared winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010

Monday, June 7, 2010

An acrobatic group known by the name of Spelbound has been declared as the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010, a televised variety talent show competition broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom. As the winning act of the show, Spelbound have won £100,000 (US$144,580, 120,313, A$175,079) and a place at The Royal Variety Performance, an annual gala evening that is attended by senior members of the British Royal Family.

In no particular order, the top three acts were revealed to be two dancers known by their stage name of Twist and Pulse, gymnastic group Spelbound and Kieran Gaffney, whose act involves playing on the drum kit. After Kieran Gaffney was revealed to be in third place, Anthony McPartlin, who hosts Britain’s Got Talent with Declan Donnelly, said to Kieran: “Well done Kieran. Kieran, you’re a star, you came back, you got all the way to the final. I know you’ve loved this. You’ve loved this, haven’t you?” In response to this, Kieran Gaffney stated: “Thank you very much. Thank you, everyone for supporting me. Thank you.”

Shortly afterwards, on the episode that was broadcast live on ITV1 on Saturday, Anthony announced: “After tens of thousands of auditons, five semi-finals and an amazing final, this…this is it. One of you is about to walk away with £100,000 and a place at this year’s Royal Variety Performance. The winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2010 is…Spelbound!” Glen Murphy from Twist and Pulse commented about finishing in second place, stating: “Yeah, it’s amazing. I can’t even believe it. I can’t believe it at all.”

Alex Uttley, a 24-year-old member of Spelbound, commented on the gymnastic group’s victory, commenting: “Oh, my god. This is unbelieveable. We just want to say thank you to everyone out there. It just shows that all our hard work has paid off.” One of the coaches of Spelbound, named Neil Griffiths, stated about Spelbound: “Oh, they’ve worked so hard over the last few weeks. Um, since the semi-final, we…we really had to pull out the stops to try and up the game. They’ve not known they’ve worked in the gym from six in the morning till twelve…twelve o’clock of the night. I couldn’t have asked for more. Um, it’s a team of coaches. I don’t take all the credit myself. There’s, uh, two people up there that know who they are who’ve been fantastic.”

Spelbound consists of 24-year-old Alex Uttley, Nicholas Illingworth, aged 24, Adam Buckingham, aged 21, 20-year-old Adam McAssey, 19-year-old Douglas Fordyce, 18-year-old Edward Upcott, 18-year-old Leighanne Cowler, 17-year-old Katie Axten, 17-year-old Lauren Kemp, 15-year-old Jonathan Stranks, Abigail Ralph, aged 15, 13-year-old Hollianne Wood and Amy Mackenzie, aged 12. Bookmakers had previously predicted that Spelbound would be the most likely act to become the winner of the series.

The running order for the final started with Twist and Pulse. The second act to perform was Liam McNally, a 14-year-old singer. The running order subsequently continued with 40-year-old impressionist Paul Burling, singer Christopher Stone, aged 28, Tina & Chandi, a woman and dog dancing act, Connected, a five-piece singing group, Kieran Gaffney, aged 12, 22-year-old Tobias Mead, a dancer, 80-year-old singer Janey Cutler and Spelbound in that particular order.

Earlier on in the final, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has stated to Spelbound: “We are hosting the 2012 Olympics and I think ‘what a brilliant opening act’.” Fellow judge Piers Morgan also commented that “[t]he purpose of this show is to identify hidden great British talent. You are that act.” After Spelbound won in the final, another judge, named Simon Cowell, stated that “the right boys and girls won on the night” and that he could “only say on live TV that that was one of the most astonishing things I have ever seen. Seriously.”

Brisbane Based New Home Builder Helps Out In East Timor}

Submitted by: Sharyn Parker

Building Timors future

Indigo Homes recently headed to East Timor to continue building (yes, physically!) a relationship with one of Australias less fortunate neighbours.

When Indigos purchasing manager, Clint Joyce, agreed to lead a week-long building project in a remote village in East Timor, he knew he wasn’t in for a typical holiday.

Usually you’re a tourist. But we were there to expand a school high up in the mountains above the clouds; we were right amongst the locals.

Life above the clouds

The week of adventure began even before Clint and the team of volunteers with the Terrace Timor Network arrived in the mountain village of Railako Kraik,.

YouTube Preview Image

The roads from Dili quickly deteriorate into dirt tracks; you have to cross rivers to get there. I’ve done a little bit of four-wheel driving, but this was a definite adventure, Clint says.

What a week can do

While the group of 12 included a couple of Queensland tradies, the bulk of the keen volunteers were building novices. Still, under Clints guidance as a registered builder, and with plenty of help from willing locals, the team constructed the new school building in record time.

The locals had had no equipment, so they had levelled the site by eye, says Clint. The first day we grabbed our levels and began digging the building platform with shovels and picks.

Because torrential rain hit most days by 3pm, the team set a cracking pace for the job, starting work at six or seven in the morning, and often working through the rain.

This was riskier than it might sound, as the volunteers accommodation was about 30 minutes away by 4WD. We had to hope the rain stopped or wed have nowhere to sleep! says Clint.

Indigo Homes a human company

When they did sleep, the crew bedded down in a basic shed that was part of the legacy left by Indigo Homes director and co-founder Chris La Franchi who took the same trip in 2009. Inspired by a friend from the Terrace Timor Network, Chris researched East Timors history and decided Indigo could help.

The real story was pretty horrendous, says Chris. You wonder how it could happen on our doorstep. Going there to help made me feel a little better.

What Chris didn’t realise was how this project would impact his own life.

I took my teenage son, to help him grow as a person. Things you take for granted here are your daily challenges there.

Indigo Homes have now committed to sending a team member every year to build in Railako Kraik.

One reason I wanted to have my own business was to be able to help the wider community. Timor is a perfect example of that, says Chris.

Indigo Homes doesnt only spend time building in East Timor. Indigo is an award-winning Brisbane-based new home builder with designs for all sites traditional, sloping, small lot and acreage. You can check out all their new home designs here.

However Indigo Homes does far more than just build homes. Theyve also created the No Surprises Building Book, available free. The book helps you get up to speed on all the steps involved in building a new home, whos responsible for what, and typical timeframes.

About the Author: I am Assistant to Manager at Indigo Homes. Indigo Homes not only build the most stunningly designed, value-for-money, quality homes but also want to make your building experience as relaxing as possible.

The French capital Paris has seen a second night of violence by demonstrators, who have blamed police for the death of a motorcyclist on Sunday.

On Sunday night youths in the eastern suburb of Bagnolet, set 29 vehicles alight and threw stones and petrol bombs at police. Monday night was “relatively calm” according to Samira Amrouche, spokeswoman for the regional administration, the authorities having depolyed 40 vans of riot police only 8 vehicles were burnt.

The motorcyclist, a pizza deliveryman, was killed when he fled police attempting to examine his documents, dying when he was struck by a pursuing police vehicle according to the youths, however in the police version his death was a result of him crashing into barriers.

The current violence has echoes of the unrest in 2005, with again dissaffected youths of Arab and black descent venting their anger and frustration.

The leaders of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) met in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday and Monday. The leaders of the three countries (Barack Obama of the United States, Felipe Calderón of Mexico, and Stephen Harper of Canada) promised to work together on swine flu, organised crime and green issues.

Despite disputes in a number of areas remaining unresolved, the three leaders succeeded in presenting an amiable Three Amigos image. The three leaders expressed solidarity, and an understanding of each others position.

The unresolved issues include the buy American clauses in the US stimulus package, tit for tat reprisals by the Mexican authorities over Canadian visa restrictions on Mexican travellers, and the US ban on Mexican trucks from crossing the border.

Risking the ire of human rights activists back home President Obama expressed support for President Calderón’s war against drugs saying he had “great confidence” in the Mexican authorities.

Mexican Federal Police (Policía Federal) have foiled an alleged plot to assasinate the President of Mexico Felipe Calderón. Acting on intelligence gathered over a year the Federal Police arrested five drug cartel members on Sunday and publicly paraded their captives and a number of weapons ,including automatic rifles, on Monday. Speaking during a summit of North American leaders Calderón played down the threats on his life, saying that the cartels are being destroyed by his policies.

Some 11000 have died since President Calderón’s took office in 2006 and made the war on drugs a cornerstone of his administration.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced by a court in Burma to a further three years of house arrest for violating the terms of her previous sentence. However her sentence was immediately commuted to 18 months on the orders of Burmese head of state Senior-General Than Shwe out of respect for her father General Aung San and out of a desire for “national reconciliation”.

The period of her arrest will prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from participating in the general elections scheduled for 2010. The sentence was immediately condemned by Western leaders, and breaking from their usual silence, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) through its current chair Thailand issued a statement expressing disappointment. The ASEAN statement and talk of further European Union and United States sanctions are unlikely to have any impact on Southeast Asian country given the support of India and China.

The Chinese issued a statement calling for the world to respect Burmese sovereignty and laws, and is seen as an indication that China, a veto power will not support any United Nations actions.

John Yettaw whose unauthorised visit led to Aung San Suu Kyi’s prosecution has himself been sentenced to seven years imprisonment, four of which will be for hard labour.

Four employees of the Rio Tinto Group have been formally arrested in China on charges of bribery and using improper practises in its negotiations with Chinese companies. The Chinese accuse the men of improperly learning the negotiating position of Chinese companies wishing to buy iron ore, and through this charging 700 billion yuan (US$102.46 billion) more then they would otherwise have been able to

The four were initially held on espionage charges and have been held since early July. The formal charges allows the Chinese authorities to hold the four a further seven months as it prepares its case against them. Their arrests followed the collapse of an attempted by Chinese owned Chinalco to raise its stake in the Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto Group to 18%.

Michael Jackson will be the star of a film to be released on October 28, some four months after his death. The film will be primarily cut from footage of Jackson rehearsing for the series of concerts that would have taken place at the O2 in London, but will also feature interviews with Jackson’s family and friends.

The film becomes possible after AEG Live, the promoter of the O2 concerts, reached an US$60 million agreement with Columbia Pictures for over 100 hours of footage of Jackson preparing for his swan song.

“He was the architect of ‘This is it‘, and we were his builders…” said Kenny Ortega, Jackson’s collaborator on the project “…it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”
